Mean Piston Speed is one good indicator of engine life:
- under 3,500 ft/min - Good reliability
- 3,500-4,000 ft/min - Stressing
- over 4,000 ft/min - Very short lived

Mean Piston Speed = 0.167 * Stroke-inches * N-crank-rpm

When custom stroking an engine you should attempt to keep the rod ratio between 1.54 and 2.0
